Home Sports After successful Chapa Dimba maiden edition, season two kicks off
Safaricom announced the return of Kenya’s biggest grassroots youth football tournament in 2017. The contest, dubbed Chapa Dimba, has entered into a partnership with Spain’s top football league, LaLiga for its second edition.
The partnership between the leading telecommunication company and LaLiga involves a scouting programme that will see certified La Liga coaches traverse the whole country in search of talented players, both boys and girls, who will make up an all-star team.
“We are very excited to be bringing on board LaLiga to add to the already existing partnership we have with Federation of Kenya Football ((FKF) for this second season of Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom. As you know LaLiga is home to some of the best footballers in the world including five-time world player of year Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann and Luka Modric.
“The All-star team selected will get a chance to attend a 10-day the training camp in Spain and will also play a few friendly games against the world’s best Spanish La Liga academies”, said Charles Kare, Acting Director, Consumer Business Unit, Safaricom. On his part Nick Mwendwa, FKF President said: “Several players have also been signed up by the local top leagues for both men and women. We are looking forward to unearthing even more talent in season two.”
Registration for tournament closed on September 30 with group games being played countrywide from October 13, 2018. Some1,567 teams took part in the first season of the tournament.
Speaking during the inaugural launch in 2017, Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore reiterated the need to wipe out corruption from sports management. Collymore narrated how his company decided to cancel the Sakata Ball tournament in 2012 after the former FKF officials led by Sam Nyamweya failed their integrity threshold. Joe Ogutu (pictured above), Head of Strategy and Innovation, Safaricom said:
“We have made remarkable achievements so far. A number of our best players have been assigned in the national teams and Kenya Premier leagues teams. This is what transformation mean to us. To the winners today, congratulations on winning the one million shillings.
“Even as we come to the close of the first season of Chapa Dimba, we do not intend to stop here. Owing to the success of the first season, I’m happy to officially announce that we will soon be launching the second chapter of Chapa Dimba Na Safaricom later this year. We look forward to working once again with our reliable partners FKF on the second season.”
The launch of the second season was marked with friendly matches involving reigning champions, Kapenguria Heroes and Plateau Queens, who played Nairobi region champions Gor Mahia Youth FC and Beijing Raiders.
